This measures blood pressure (BP) at regular intervals over 24-48 hours (whilst you are awake and asleep).
It is useful for the following reasons:
Suspected white-coat hypertension (clinic BP reading taken by a doctor is higher than corresponding readings taken by a nurse or other trained practitioner in the same setting).
Suspected masked hypertension (untreated subject with normal clinic BP and elevated during normal activity).
Hypertension despite appropriate treatment.
Titrating BP treatment.
Suspected of confirmed sleep apnoea.
Syncope ('Blackout’) or other symptoms suggesting orthostatic hypotension (significant drop in BP from lying-to-sitting-to-standing positions).
